Safe Kids Upstate led kids on an educational adventure, thanks to Safety Safari Camp and generous donors!

Safe Kids® Upstate, led by Greenville Hospital System Children's Hospital, is an injury prevention coalition with more than 70 community partners who join together to prevent childhood injuries and deaths in upstate South Carolina. Safe Kids Upstate plans community events and educational programs focusing on many safety initiatives: Car Seat Safety, School Safety, Home Safety, Bicycle Safety, Pedestrian Safety, Fire Safety, Water Safety, and Sports Safety.  Because of high public demand for our programs, we are now in three counties:  Greenville, Pickens, and Oconee.

Need for Safe Kids:
  • The South Carolina death and injury rate continues to be higher than the national average.
  • Accidental injury is the number one killer of children age 14 and under in the United States.
  • Accidental injury kills more children in the United States than diseases, kidnappings, and drugs combined.
  • These injuries and deaths cost society $175 billion annually.
  • Ninety percent of these injuries could be prevented if families took the simple steps necessary to protect their children.

Since Safe Kids Upstate began:
  • A dramatic 24% decline in accidental deaths has occurred in Greenville County among children under age 15.
  • More than 15,000 bike helmets and 2,000 car seats have been provided to needy families. More than 100 special needs car seats have also been distributed.
  • More then 65,000 children have been educated on fire prevention and safety.
  • More than 2,000 life-saving devices (smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, carbon monoxide detectors, etc.) have been distributed.
  • More than 2,500 school safety patrols have been trained and equipped.
  • More than 3,000 Sports Injury Guides have been given to coaches, athletic trainers, and parents, along with 13,000 mouth guards.
  • Many national and local awards have been won: National SAFE KIDS Coalition (2002), National SAFE KIDS Event of the Year for SAFE KIDS Fest 2002, Telly Award for Congratulations, You're a Safety Patrol training video (2005), just to name a few.

GREENVILLE, SC – To help meet the Upstate’s growing healthcare needs and attract young people into the workforce, Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center has launched the GHS Medical Experience Academy, a pipeline for students interested in advanced training in health care. The debut class includes 12 rising high-school seniors, but GHS envisions the program expanding down to the elementary level and up to college.
